In the penultimate round of the Spanish La Liga, Atletico host points-seeking Sevilla – who have more to play for as they chase Getafe and a Champions League spot.

Meanwhile, already-crowned Champions – Barcelona welcome a Getafe side aiming to seal a fourth-place finish.

Coming off a 3-2 win over Villarreal in their last outing, Real Madrid look to connect two wins in a row for the first time since March when they play at Sociedad.

APRECON previews the penultimate round of the Spanish top tier division;

Atletico Madrid vs Sevilla

Date: Sunday, 12th May
Kick-off: 5:30 pm
Stadium: Wanda Metropolitano

Sevilla travel on a tough trip to Madrid on Sunday afternoon with a lot more to play for, as they sit three points behind 4th placed Getafe and look desperate for points to challenge for a Champions League spot very late in the campaign.

Atletico Madrid have no high stakes to play for but this will surely not have Diego Simeone’s men granting favours, as they saw a disappointing 3-0 loss at Espanyol end their four-match winning streak last week. They will not want to see anything similar last time out at Wanda Metropolitano and this will, without any doubt, make it tough for the visitors.

Atletico have seen nothing but wins in their last seven home outings since mid-February, as they beat Juventus (2-0), Villarreal (2-0), Leganes (1-0), Girona (2-0), Celta (2-0), Valencia (3-2), and most recently Valladolid (1-0) – proving their worth at the back and regularly basing success on such an approach.

A win here wouldn’t hand the La Liga title to Atletico, neither would a loss take them outside the top-four, but being the last home match for the Madrid this season, they surely will not want to give their own fans a bad sight on home ground. A draw is not ruled out of sight in this tie.

Barcelona vs Getafe

Date: Sunday, 12th May
Kick-off: 5:30 pm
Stadium: Camp Nou

Barcelona have seen a disappointing Champions League trip to Liverpool and a thrashing 4-0 loss saw them fall just short of a Final in Madrid despite a 3-0 home win over the English rivals last week. They now host Getafe looking to bounce back and end a streak of two losses in a row.

Blaugrana have been in great shape at Camp Nou and now look for their ninth win in a row and across competitions. They’ve already secured the title but will want to finish the campaign here on a positive note, which is bound to have them motivated.

However, Getafe have more to play for after making the top-4 cut and sitting three points clear of both 5th placed Valencia and 6th placed Sevilla. They beat Girona (2-0) in front of the home fans last week but can boast no real consistency, especially struggling for stability away from home.

It is not so good a record that Getafe have only earned just one win in their last ten away games but while we’ve seen them scoring on the regular, just six draws and three losses also on the records will hardly feel like a great boost to their confidence.

Nevertheless, Barcelona will aim to bounce back quickly and secure the home points despite no immediate importance to them, as they look to put a loss at Liverpool behind them. Barcelona are in the right position to deny Getafe their all-important points.

Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid

Date: Sunday, 12th May
Kick-off: 5:30 pm
Stadium: Anoeta

Real Madrid have seen a thriller 3-2 win over Villarreal as they sent the rivals in the immediate danger zone once again despite conceding twice, ending a two-match winless streak and now hoping to build on such a high-scoring performance as they take on a trip to Anoeta.

Los Blancos failed to find the net on trips to Getafe (0-0) and Rayo Vallecano (1-0) beforehand and this will be more worrying for Zinedine Zidane. They’ve thus seen a four-match winless streak on the road extended and will be desperate to finally put an end to it.

Real Sociedad have, on the other hand, ended a four-match winless streak as they beat Getafe (2-1) and Deportivo Alaves (0-1) in their last two outings. They’ve been scoring goals at Anoeta on the regular and building on such records will be important for them,

In the two sides’ last six head-to-head clashes, Sociedad have bagged two wins, with two draws and two losses.

Real Madrid will hope to end the season on a high – and a victory here and in their last match will help raise their fans’ hopes for a successful next campaign.
