The Nigerian prize for literature, science and criticism sponsored by Nigeria LNG limited has called for entries for the 2019 prize in the categories.
According to their website, “the prizes are aimed at bringing Nigerian scientists and authors to public attention and celebrating excellence in scientiﬁc breakthroughs and literary accomplishments in the nation”.
“NLNG believes that the science prize will provide leaders with answers to crucial issues in development; improve the standards of living and re-energise the scientiﬁc community to seek solutions to national problems. With The Nigeria Prize for Literature, it is expected that the quest for a prestigious prize will improve the quality of writing, editing, proof-reading, and publishing in the country with far-reaching positive effect on print and broadcast journalism.
The prizes are administered, on behalf of Nigeria LNG Limited, by the Nigerian Academy of Science and the Advisory Board for Literature made up of members of Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL) and the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA). Winners are announced in October, commemorating the ﬁrst export of LNG cargo by NLNG on October 9, 1999.”
The prizes have been on for 15 years now since its inception in 2004.
The Nigeria Prize for literature rotates every year between prose fiction, drama, poetry and children literature. For this year, the competition is on children’s literature and it carries a reward of $100,000.00.
For the Nigeria Prize for criticism “contestants shall send in three critical essays published in
major scholarly journals. Such journals shall have a proven track record of dedication” for the reward of N1,000,000.00.
While for the science prize, entrants will contest for $100,000.00 with research works that revolve around this year’s theme which is “Climate Change: Erosion, Drought and Desertification”.
The deadline for submissions for prizes for literature and criticism is April 5, 2019 while for science is May 3, 2019.

2019 African Writers Award
Similarly, submission is open for the 2019 African Writers Award.
The African Writers Development Trust (AWDT) will be accepting submissions for the 2019 African Writers Award which revolves around the theme “Cultural stereotypes in African Literature: Rewriting the narrative for the 21st Century Reader”.
The categories open for submissions are: Flash Fiction which requires a maximum of 300 words; Short Stories: 2,500 – 5,000 words; Poetry with a maximum of 30 lines; Children’s stories:1,500 words with illustrations (optional).
According to their website, “four writers of African descent will win prestigious awards. The awards will be presented at the 2019 African Writers Conference Dinner and Awards Night scheduled to hold in September this year. The venue, date and time will be communicated at a later date.”
The deadline for all submissions is May 31st, 2019.
